Reading across the school

Here at St Helen's we are passionate about reading in all forms!

Foundation Stage

In the Foundation Stage we use Jolly Phonics to teach phonics in Nursery, moving on to Letters and Sounds.

Phonics information for parents of children in Reception

Key Stage 1

In KS1 we continue with Letters and Sounds to deliver phonics teaching. We use our reading schemes to develop children's reading.  We use Oxford Literacy Web within school and Oxford Reading Tree and Phonics Bug as home reading books.

Mrs Coates delivers the Reading Recovery programme for identified children in KS1.

Key Stage 2

In KS2 we predominantly use Oxford Reading Tree as a reading scheme, alongside a personal choice of book from the school library. For those children who require additional support or intervention we use a range of Oxford Trackers.

Once our children progress through the Oxford Reading Tree scheme they can move onto reading books from the school library.

Once a week, one class from school goes to the Headland Library where they go and work with one of the Hartlepool Librarians. They can choose a book and take it back to school. They can read this as part of one of their Guided Reading sessions in class or take it home to enjoy.

All pupils are members of the local Headland Library.
